“Dar Pomorza” ready for her centenary
In 2009, the “Dar Pomorza” is celebrating her centenary. This will be an occasion for numerous interesting cultural events in Gdynia. Major centenary celebrations are scheduled for October. “We are planning the celebrations together with the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół “Daru Pomorza” (Society of Friends of Dar Pomorza), the Polskie Towarzystwo Nautologiczne (Polish Nautological Society) and Gdynia City Hall” says director of the Polish Maritime Museum in Gdańsk Jerzy Litwin, Ph.D.
In recent months, the “Dar Pomorza” has undergone major maintenance and repair works, designed to prepare her for the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of her launching. Most of the work was done at the Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa S.A. (Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard). Some of the work, like re-rigging or maintenance of deck elements, had been done at the berth of the museum ship. While in dock, both the topsides and the bottom part of the vessel were repaired, the thickness of the plating was measured, zinc protectors were replaced and maintenance work was done on the power screw. Before the “Dar Pomorza” left the dock, she was given a new coat of paint, both above and below water line. The funding was provided by the operational programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage 2008 and the resources of the Polish Maritime Museum in Gdańsk (CMM), with co-funding by the Gdynia City Hall and the Society of Friends of Dar Pomorza.
The tall ship is back at the Basen Prezydenta (Presidential Basin) and has been available to visitors since 15 January 2009. And what will the year 2009 bring for the Dar Pomorza? It will certainly be a unique year. During the Tall Ships’ Races next July she will be the honorary participant among the vessels that will come to Gdynia and is likely to be visited by a record number of tourists.
