Vistula River in the History of Gdańsk

Last December, the Central Maritime Museum exhibition on the Vistula River and Gdansk was hosted in Shanghai and in May, 2006 we welcomed in Gdansk a Chinese exhibition on the Shanghai’s “River-mother”, Huang-pu. The next step in the cooperation between the CMM, Gdansk City, National Archive and the Archive Board of China is an exhibition inaugurated on June 4, during the Second Gdansk Meeting. The title of the exhibition is “Vistula River in the History of Gdansk and Powisle Region”.

We were seeking to show the relationship between Vistula and Gdansk in a broad perspective. Traditionally, the works on Vistula River focus on the river’s Golden Age, but our ambition was to show its role since the very beginning of the state of Poland until contemporary times and forecasts for the future. Thus it is the first holistic and comprehensive attitude. We present all the issues connected with settlement in the delta of the “Queen of the Polish rivers”, its role in the history and economy of Gdansk, ships built in Gdansk and Pomerania and used on Vistula, maritime and river legislation, recreation on the river, bridges and ferries, and development perspectives of the city of Gdansk. We describe also famous people of the sea and of the river.

Our exhibition is well illustrated with paintings, drawings, and old postcards, reprints of the old books and maps, scale models of buildings Come and see!
